Update on Alameda County Ballot Count

We learned last night that there is an unusually high number of ballots from Tuesday’s election that remain uncounted – more than 100,000 mail and provisional ballots, on paper, that were mailed or dropped off at polls. The estimate now from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters is that the final certification of results will not be done for a couple more weeks.

However, according to calculations run by a statistically-savvy member of our group, and independently by the East Bay Express, the pro-A1 side would need to get almost 80% of the remaining ballots to change the outcome. This would be highly improbable. So we remain confident, but unfortunately at this point we also just have to remain patient until the final, final is out! And be glad this isn’t Florida!

Measure A1 Defeated!

UNBELIEVABLE! We actually pulled it off. Our underdog, ragtag, come-from-behind campaign defeated Measure A1. The zoo will not have more than $100 million of our tax dollars to destroy our beautiful Knowland Park. And that’s a good thing, because the creatures that already live there depend on that habitat. (More about them in a bit.)

Wild Animals of the Maritime Chaparral in Knowland Park

DSC01780Over a period of several weeks, teacher and photographer Christian Naventi took a series of photos of a few of the species of wildlife from within the rare maritime chaparral.  This area would be fenced off if the Oakland Zoo succeeds in building its proposed expansion.  Setting up a camera along a trail, he was able to capture species that use the area to forage, hunt, and mark their territories.

Fact-checking the Claims of Oakland Zoo Executives and Spokespersons

What’s the Truth about Measure A1?

There has been considerable discussion about what was said, by whom, where and when, and what it all might mean. The following shows some of what’s been disputed.

We provide links to documents from many sources, including links to audio recorded at (1) the Oct. 11 League of Women Voters Election Forum, held at Piedmont City Hall, and (2) KQED’s Oct. 22 edition of Forum, hosted by Michael Krasny.

At both of these sites, search functions must be used to find the relevant files; for the first one, use “League of Women Voters”, and for the second, use “Measure A1”.

Where possible, we provide the timing of the clips provided, so the audio can be heard in its original context. The former site also provides streaming video.

For those interested in reading them, here is the full and official text of Measure A1. And here is an analysis of Measure A1 produced by No on A1 to Save Knowland Park, PAC #1351843. Sponsored by East Bay Chapter, California Native Plant Society.
